When it comes to how long a hat will last: artisan felt lasts about 10 to 15 years with proper care. Rabbit felt will last 15 to 20 years with care and love. Our 50/50 rabbit-and-beaver blend gets you past the 20-year mark — buy it in 2026, and it’s still going strong in 2046. And full beaver felt is a true heirloom piece, lasting 30 to 50 years — the kind of hat you pass down to your kids or put in your trust.

Our tiers, from entry to heirloom: artisan felt is the base tier entering the luxury market, lasting 10 to 15 years. Rabbit felt goes 15 to 20 years. Our half-rabbit, half-beaver blend gets you 20+ years. And full beaver is a true heirloom piece at 30+ years. So the progression is artisan felt, rabbit, 50/50 beaver blend, then full beaver.

Our hats feel different because of the materials and construction. We start with heavy western-weight felt — it’s thicker and heavier, but it breathes. We also intentionally don’t line our hats. That’s deliberate: without a lining, the felt can shape directly to the top of your head over time, rather than being blocked by a barrier. Linings look great, but they trap heat — unlined artisan felt stays breathable on hot days and warm on cold ones. If a hat feels a little different than what you’re used to — maybe it fits a bit rounder, or the texture feels unfamiliar — that’s intentional. We want you to connect directly with the felt, and for the hat to shape itself to your head over time, so it becomes truly yours rather than something pressed on a machine-made block.

If you can’t try a hat on in person, here’s how to get the right size. At the Atelier, we generally carry three sizes — 57, 58, and 59 — so try one on and feel the felt if you can. If that’s not possible, grab a fabric measuring tape and reach out to orders@thrichbrims.com with your head measurement — metric is preferred, but either metric or standard works. From there, we can make sure your hat is built to the exact right size. And if you’re local, we’re happy to meet in person — at the Atelier or somewhere convenient — to take an exact measurement.

If you fall in love with a hat at the Atelier but it doesn’t fit, don’t worry — there’s a QR code on-site, or you can email orders@thrichbrims.com, and we’ll personally remake it in the size you need. It’s a simple process, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

Every hat gets 15 to 20 hours of dedicated work to build correctly, so we don’t offer standard returns or exchanges. But if something is genuinely wrong with the hat — it fits oddly, something’s come loose, or the shape just isn’t right — reach out and we’ll find a way to make it right. We want your experience to be a good one, and honestly, we want you to come back for more than one hat.

Caring for your hat is simple. For everyday dust, just brush it off — that’s your basic dry cleaning. If it gets wet, lay it flat (not on the brim) so it dries in its natural shape. For hats with more of a flared, cowboy-style brim, resting it on the crown works well and helps preserve the brim’s shape. A hat stand is another great option for hats you wear often — or mount a small hook or decorative cabinet knob on the wall and hang it there. If you’re storing a hat in the closet, use a hat bag — every hat purchased from us comes with one, in a color to match — the fabric breathes, so it protects against dust without trapping moisture. For hats you wear less often, a hat box is a great choice. But if you’re wearing a hat frequently, keep it out — on a stand, a hook, or a dresser top — because a hat that’s in regular rotation starts to take on its own character over time. We build every hat with a personality in mind, but the hat truly comes alive through wear.

Ready-to-wear pieces are available at the Atelier — and even if we don’t have your exact size in stock, we can remake it to fit you. Bespoke is different: each piece is one-of-one, built specifically for the person who commissions it, to their exact specifications, sizing, and design vision. So the short version — bespoke is made entirely to your specs and design direction, while ready-to-wear reflects what you see in the Atelier, just built to your size.
